Research & Development Field Report – 4th Edition

The PBI-Gordon Research & Development Team is pleased to present the Fourth Edition of the R&D Field Report. This report contains scientific information to support the important work underway by our agronomic partners, distribution representatives, and end-users. Our intent is to provide useful, research-based information prior to the seasonal emergence of pests.

2023 AGRONOMIC REVIEW AND PLANNING FOR 2024

WEEDS

  • Broadleaf Weed Control in Cool-Season Turf
    • Late-summer or early-fall prior to first frost is a great time to control perennial broadleaves.
    • Q4® Plus is a great product for hard to control weeds such as dandelion, crabgrass, ground ivy, plantain and suppression of yellow nutsedge, whereas SpeedZone® EW Turf is ideal at this timing on weeds like ground ivy, clover, dandelion, and plantain.
  • Poa Control in Warm-Season
    • Katana® Turf Herbicide is great to combine with PRE herbicides (prodiamine, indaziflam, pronamide, simazine) for optimal control.
    • PRE+POST mixtures should be applied at an early-POST timing (October to December depending on location).
    • Katana® + pronamide or Katana® + Bensumec™ 4LF Pre-Emergent Grass & Weed Herbicide are great options for bermudagrass putting greens applied once or twice beginning when Poa first emerges.
  • Cleaning Up Weeds Prior to Warm-Season Dormancy
    • Give warm-season turfgrasses the best chance to acclimate to winter dormancy by controlling weeds such as crabgrass, goosegrass, and broadleaf weeds.
    • SpeedZone® EW, Avenue™ South, Katana®, and Q4® Plus are good solutions to consider for this application.

DISEASES

  • Spring Dead Spot (SDS)
    • Kabuto® Fungicide SC is the premium fungicide for control of spring dead spot (Golf, commercial, and residential).
    • >95% control is achieved with a single application of 3.2 fl. oz/1,000 sq. ft.
      • Application must be applied when 2” soil temperature is between 55-65°F.
      • Immediate post-application irrigation (>1/8”) is critical.
    • >95% control is achieved with two applications 1.0-1.6 fl. oz/1,000 sq. ft.
      • First application when 2” soil temperature is below 70°F.
      • Second application ~21 days after treatment (before 2” soil temp is < 60°F).
      • Immediate post-application irrigation (>1/8”) is critical.
  • Take-All Root Rot (TARR)
    • Preventive application programs should be initiated late-summer.
    • Mefentrifluconazole and azoxystrobin are strong preventive fungicides (at high rates).
      • Immediate post-application irrigation (>1/8”) is critical.
  • Dollar Spot
    • Fall dollar spot has been more damaging and more severe than early summer outbreaks in recent years; ensure timely fall applications have been applied preventively.
    • Tekken® Broad Spectrum Fungicide provides excellent 21-28 day dollar spot control, and is ideal for large acreage applications.
  • Tropical Storm Season and Disease Control
    • Gray Leaf Spot
      • Outbreaks are likely through September along the eastern seaboard.
      • Preventive applications with thiophanate-methyl, chlorothalonil, and prothioconazole.
    • Pythium Blight (and leaf spot) on bermudagrass greens
    • Inclusion of a contact fungicide is also ideal when tropical systems are anticipated.

INSECTS

  • White Grubs – CURATIVE Control
    • Curative applications for white grubs should be applied when grubs are first observed and are smaller in size.
      • Effective active ingredients include clothianidin, trichlorfon, and carbaryl.
      • Immediate post application irrigation of 0.1-0.2” is necessary for efficacy.
      • Applications resulting in >60% control of white grubs as a curative treatment would be considered successful.
  • Annual Bluegrass Weevil (ABW) on the Move
    • ABW is moving farther west and south with significant establishment in northwest Ohio and Kentucky, as well as far south as north Georgia.
  • Spotted Lantern Fly – ADULT Control
    • The active ingredient in Zylam® Liquid Systemic Insecticide (dinotefuran) is highly effective for control of adult spotted lantern flies1, with adult death occurring in as little as 24-hr in treated trees2.
      • Optimal application method is by bark-banding, with rate determined by tree DBH.
      • Apply Zylam® at the appropriate rate with an organosilicate surfactant.
